Smiling Tree, an acclaimed eleven-year-old green initiative, has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability by creating three innovative Vertical Gardens at Gyan Bharati School in Saket, New Delhi. Utilizing old plastic bottles as planters, this eco-friendly initiative aims to raise awareness about recycling and inspire students to lead an environmentally responsible lifestyle.
Ms. Lata Vaidyanathan, Director of Gyan Bharati School, expressed her heartfelt appreciation for Smiling Tree’s dedication to the environment and its consistent efforts to improve sustainability. The collaboration is a testament to the organization’s ongoing mission to foster environmental consciousness among young minds.
Since its inception, Smiling Tree has been actively working towards a greener future, planting over seven lakh saplings in and around the Delhi-NCR region. Their tireless efforts include conducting Plantation Drives, Anti Plastic Drives, and Environment Awareness Campaigns to inspire people, especially students, to adopt eco-friendly practices.
Dr. Mukesh Kwatra, the visionary founder of Smiling Tree, highlighted the importance of recycling old plastic bottles, which are predominantly composed of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and take centuries to decompose. The Vertical Gardens project is a creative solution to repurpose these bottles, mitigating the environmental impact of plastic waste in landfills.
The vertical arrangement of the bottles in the gardens serves a dual purpose. Not only does it optimize space, but it also minimizes water wastage by ensuring water conservation through efficient irrigation. Dr. Kwatra emphasized the significance of such sustainable practices in reducing environmental pollution and safeguarding our natural resources for future generations.
This isn’t the first time Smiling Tree has implemented such an initiative. The organization has successfully installed numerous Vertical Gardens in schools, colleges, and other institutions, encouraging communities to embrace eco-friendly alternatives and combat the pressing environmental challenges.
